Jean-Pierre Hairbrushes

For those of you who know me, one of the most noticeable things is my hair. I have very long, thick hair that is very dense. Over the years, I have collected about 60 hairbrushes of varying quality. From boar’s bristle, natural wooden and bamboo, to just plain vented plastic so I know the value of a quality brush. Recently, I was given the opportunity from Kristin to try some very exclusive and high-end hairbrushes from France.

Brushing the hair has a great deal of value because it not only gets rid of tangles, it also distributes the oils from your scalp that coat and protect the hair like no conditioner can. The shine will be a result of the distributed oils and the cuticles of each hair that are smoothed by the brushing action. Dead hair and splits are also removed, leaving only a head of healthy, live hair. It is also important because it increases the circulation in the scalp to produce and maintain healthy hair. According to the books I’ve read throughout the years, the best brushes for accomplishing this task are natural boar bristle.

The first brush I tried is called Privilege. The brush I tried was purely synthetic with clear bristles. I found that the bristles were firm and invigorating on my scalp, and among the 4 brushes I tried was the best for really reaching into my thick hair and taming it. The bristles were of a perfect firmness to use on damp hair. The narrower width of the brush area was also comfortable to use. The brush is also perfectly weighted to feel comfortable in the hand.

I give the Jean Pierre Privilege brush a 5 star rating because it was effective, and surprisingly high quality. Everything seems to be calculated on this brush to provide the best usage. It is also very well made and would probably last a much longer time than a cheaper product.

Next, I tried the Prestige. I reviewed a larger, wider brush that had a combination of Natural Boar and synthetic bristles. I found that this was a nice brush to use after wet detangling with the Privilege. The combination of bristles gave the benefits of boar bristle with the firmness of synthetic so it was able to work through my thick hair. This brush seemed to “polish” my hair because I noticed a change in shine and softness in my hair after a week. I would not recommend using only this brush if you have thick hair like me. It is better to get your detangling done first and use this brush for finishing your hair.

I give this brush a 5 star rating as well because it was comfortable to use, and the combination bristles worked with my dense hair and there was a noticeable shine improvement.

Next, I tried the purse size Desiree all boar bristle brush. This brush was comfortable in my hand despite the smaller size. It was weighted properly, and has a nice grippable handle. I discovered that it was very difficult to brush completely through my hair, and that it didn’t work well at detangling. It did even less to style my hair so it wasn’t really useful to carry around in my purse. It would be nice however, for someone with finer hair.

I give the Desiree purse sized all boar bristle brush a 2 star rating because it didn’t work for my hair. I was pleased however, with its construction, weight, and feel.

Finally, I tried the Round Natural Boar Bristle medium brush. They also have a large brush that probably would have worked better on my hair. This brush has a comfortable wooden handle that fits perfectly in the palm. The mid sized brush was very well made, and would be more suited to straighten out the bangs or ends. I found that it was less effective on me because it didn’t reach in through my thick hair to effectively straighten out the tangles.

I give this brush a 2 star rating because it is a very nice brush that was considerately made and comfortable in my hand. The wooden handle is nicely shaped and the perfect weight. It wasn’t as effective on my hair though, but if I had the longer bristle version (large size), it probably would have worked better for me.

Overall, Jean-Pierre Brushes are of an excellent quality that is obvious from the feel of the brush in the hand, the materials, and the sturdy construction. They are definitely high quality brushes that are worth the price because they are a good investment. If you have thick, dense hair like mine, you should select carefully to pick brushes that will reach through the hair to comb out tangles effectively and polish the cuticle.
